TOKYO 2020 WE BELIEVE
On September 5, just a few days before the election of the host city for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, a candle lighting event in support of Tokyo’s bid was held at Zojoji Temple in Minato Ward. With the temple and Tokyo Tower specially illuminated in the background, 2,020 candles were lit expressing the hope that Tokyo would win the Games bid.

Tokyo selected as the host city for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games
On September 7, Tokyo was selected as the host city for the 2020 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games at the IOC (International Olympic Committee) Session held in Buenos Aires.People all over Japan were overjoyed in the early morning hours of September 8, when the word "Tokyo" was read aloud at the ceremony announcing the host city.

From candidate city to host city
On September 10, after Tokyo was selected as the host city for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, posters referring to Tokyo as a “candidate city” were replaced with posters celebrating Tokyo’s selection as the host city at Tochomae Station on the Toei Oedo Line.

The Sports Festival in Tokyo 2013 begins
On September 28, the Sports Festival in Tokyo 2013, which combines the 68th National Sports Festival and the 13th National Sports Games for the Challenged into one sports festival, kicked off. On that day, the opening ceremony of the 68th National Sports Festival took place in the presence of Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko at Ajinomoto Stadium.
